Many Glacier
This last weekend, Fallon and I traveled with Desiree and Patrick to Glacier to celebrate independence day. We had an awesome trip, and got to see both the west and east sides of the park, even though Going to the Sun is not completely open yet. This is the latest the road has still be closed in as long as anyone can remember; the snow that is still up there is ridiculous. We stayed at Lake McDonald Lodge both nights, but took the “Empire Builder” Amtrak train across the southern end of the park and into East Glacier for most of Sunday. We rented a sweet Lincoln Continental to cruise up and down the east side of the park. On Monday, we visited Hungry Horse Damn just outside the west entrance. About 30 other pics are posted on Facebook, but stay tuned here as well, I will add more.
French Hotel
I wish I remember more about this place than I do. All I know is we were driving down the highway in southern France, looking for a place to stay, and the next thing I hear is “turn around, turn around”. This place is a modern day castle, fixed up with a moat, awesome detail, and leftover Christmas decor. I have a few photo’s of this place, and will be posting them over the next few days. Interspersed will be more recent pictures, starting with this weekend’s trip to Glacier!
Colmar Pub
After spending a very loud and obnoxious night in Visp, Switzerland to ring in the new year, we ventured into the Alsace region of France via train. We arrived in Colmar pretty late in the evening on the 1st of January, and quickly set out in search of food. Nothing was open. After much searching. we ended up finding this one pub still open. With most items on the menu either too foreign to understand, or 86′ed, we all ended up eating 2 croque monsieur’s for dinner (hot ham and cheese sandwiches). Yummy.
More Hidden People
This is probably going to be the last post from the Glacier Express. Like the previous photograph, this one is also a puzzle. This time, there are two people hiding in the reflections. You can see all of one person, and a small part of another.
Spring keeps trying to inch its way into Missoula. We have about an hour of sunshine for every hour of wind/rain/snow mix we get. It has been very pleasant, especially for Sophie who gets to once again venture outside every now and then. Fallon is super busy with homework, while I am pretty busy with my new job. We’ve also gotten an early start on house-project season. So far we have fixed some leaky valves in our laundry room, and replaced a light fixture in the downstairs bedroom. Next up is the first bit of yardwork for the year.
Also, we have a new addition to the family: a 2006 Volkswagen Passat, which joined the family last week. Its time to let our truck relax a bit, and for us to enjoy the comfort of a smoother ride. See you soon.
Still Blinded
I feel a theme emerging here. Snow + sun = hard to see the scenery. For a good portion of this trip, I was just taking pictures without really knowing what I was aiming at. This one is a good representation of just how bright it can be. And with all the dark tunnels we went through, our eyes just couldn’t keep up. If you look closely, you can see Grandma Stanton in this picture.
Bright Switzerland
This picture looks a lot different than what we could actually see with our eyes. Half of the trip through the Swiss Alps was so bright you were forced to squint and you couldn’t see anything even when you were doing so. The original of this photograph is actually pretty white and doesn’t look like much.
Tonight… dinner at Brooks and Browns, followed by the Law School’s Barrister’s Ball!
Glacier Express
This is our nice cozy spot on the Switzerland’s Glacier Express, a scenic railway that literally bounces from mountaintop to mountaintop, through tunnels, and across bridges all the way through the Swiss Alps. It goes between St. Moritz in the east to Zermatt in west. The entire trip is 291 Km, goes through 91 tunnels, and across 291 bridges. We did almost the entire length of the trip, spending something like 4 hours on the train. Upcoming photographs will be from this portion of the trip.
Chur Graffiti 2
More graffiti from Chur, Switzerland. This time found on a wall inside a shoe store, so I’m sure this particular piece was commissioned.
We just started week 6 of our semester which for me means the start of 2, 10-week classes, and for Fallon means more of the same grind (5+ hours of homework a night).
